[X] Change keyboard layout/mapping on the fly on the console

I booted into a live USB Gentoo system, but even though I selected german key mapping just after the boot process started, the KDE desktop used the american layout - somewhat annoying, especially since I was not able to graphically select a german layout. The where just 8 selectable but german was not amongst, swiss would not help a lot and I was unable to install more layouts. One at irc channel #gentoo told me, I could issue the following on the command line and it works just great.
setxkbmap -verbose de

[lvm2] no devices after reboot

I was installing a Gentoo system on lvm partitions. While doing so, the system of the live USB stick froze and I had to reboot. However, no lvm devices where present in /dev even though I successfully displayed the volume group (vgdisplay) and the logical volumes (lvdisplay). The point is, that after the boot volume groups are deactivated so I had to activate them. I had this info from #gentoo IRC channel but was too dump to record it somewhere accessible because I had to shutdown my system to go home. It took me a good deal of time to find the solution again on the net but here it is:
vgchange --activate y vg_sata

[Windoof (7)] Prepend user PATH to the system PATH environment variable

This is not possible. Probably for security reasons, Windoof always appends a user variable called PATH to the system variable PATH. It looks to me as if Winzigweich does not trust in Windoofs right management. However. work around for cmd.exe usage by creating shortcuts with the shortcut command being
cmd.exe /K set PATH=%_PATH%;%PATH%
where _PATH is a user variable containing the path portion that should be prepended. In my case the system PATH variable contained the path to a broken sqlplus installation. So I wanted to overrule that.

[Java] jEdit (or other Java application) freezes goes black when dragging it from main monitor to another on multi monitor extended desktop Windows 7 environment

Funny enough, it used to work but after a distributed software update at the office, I have mentioned problem. The freeze was under Windows 7 and 32 bit Java 1.8.0_131. Under Windows 10 and 32 bit Java 1.8.0_131 and HoSpot build 25.131-b11 the java applicatioin does not freeze but on the extended screens black out but the application still works.

The problem is the usage of the Direct3D pipeline. You need to switch it off. Therefore define the environment variable
J2D_D3D
with the value
false
and your done. You just have to restart affected applications (obviously for the freeze anyway).

I found the workaround described at OTN.

[WDMyCloud] ordinary users ssh recurringly breaks

Setup

Call me paranoid but I do not like Windoof file share even in my own home network, so I set up ssh. But it periodically breaks but I do not know why and have not got to investigate into it. I guess, however, that there is sort of system update.

Symptoms

Obviously, the connection fails. But, I get some messages too.
  1. On the command line connection try I see
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
@       WARNING: POSSIBLE DNS SPOOFING DETECTED!          @
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

  2. After having worked around it, it is a permission denied.
  3. In MyCloud:/var/log/sshd.log I get
User <your user> from debian.fritz.box not allowed because not listed in AllowUsers

Work-around

  1. Use the command you get provided to remove the offending key:
    ssh-keygen -f "/home/<your user>/.ssh/known_hosts" -R <remote fqdn or ip address>
  2. Add in /etc/ssh/sshd_config your user name to the list after AllowUsers. It is a space delimited list.
  3. You need to reload the ssh config, e.g. with /etc/init.d/ssh reload

Update on firmware update

Installing a normal firmware update (why does WD it called like this since it is a patch of the Debian OS they use and not something in the eproms or what ever?) breaks it as well. Point its as far as I can tell they just replace the whole OS. Having that said it obviously removed my guerilla installation of subversion. I mere apt-get update && apt-get install subversion fixed this but file persimissions where left too untidy to leave key authentication working. Fix: chown thiemo /DataVolume/shares/Thiemo && chmod g-w /DataVolume/shares/Thiemo
